It’s a great question. And the honest answer is a little more nuanced than most people expect.

The Classic Explanation
For decades, cannabis has been categorized into three buckets:
**Indica** strains are traditionally associated with a relaxing, full-body effect. People reach for indicas in the evening, after a long day, or when they want to wind down and sleep. You may have heard the phrase “in da couch” — a playful way of saying indicas tend to keep you planted right where you are.
**Sativa** strains are traditionally associated with a more energizing, uplifting, cerebral effect. Sativas are often the choice for creative projects, social situations, or daytime use when you still want to feel functional and focused.
**Hybrid** strains are, as the name suggests, a cross between indica and sativa genetics. Most hybrids lean one direction or the other — you’ll often see them described as “indica-dominant” or “sativa-dominant” — and they’re bred to offer a more balanced or tailored experience.

The More Honest Answer
Here’s where it gets interesting. Modern cannabis science has shown us that the indica/sativa distinction is actually more about plant biology than it is about how the plant makes you feel.
What really drives your experience is **terpenes** – the aromatic compounds found in cannabis (and in countless other plants) that shape the effect, the flavor, and the mood of any given strain. A myrcene-heavy strain tends to be sedating. A limonene-forward strain tends to feel uplifting and bright. A strain rich in pinene can feel clarifying and focused.
THC percentage matters too, but it’s not the whole story – and many experienced consumers will tell you that chasing the highest THC number isn’t always the path to the best experience.
What this means practically: two strains both labeled “sativa” can feel completely different from each other. And sometimes an indica surprises you with how clear-headed it feels.
So How Do You Actually Choose?
At Rose Collective, this is exactly what our budtenders are here for. Rather than just pointing you toward an indica or a sativa shelf, we like to ask a few questions:
– **What time of day are you consuming?** Morning and afternoon usually call for something different than evening.
– **What are you hoping to feel?** Relaxed, creative, sleepy, social, focused?
– **What’s your experience level?** A first-time consumer and a seasoned one need very different starting points.
– **Do you have any sensitivities?** Some people are prone to anxiety with high-THC products — there are great options for that.
From there, we look at the specific strain — its terpene profile, its THC and CBD levels, how other customers have responded to it — and make a recommendation that actually fits you as a person.

A Simple Starting Guide
If you’re not sure where to begin, here’s a rough framework that works for most people:
**Looking to relax or sleep better** Start with an indica or indica-dominant hybrid. Look for strains high in myrcene. Keep THC moderate if you’re newer to cannabis.
**Looking for daytime use or creativity** Try a sativa or sativa-dominant hybrid. Limonene and pinene-forward strains tend to feel uplifting without being overwhelming.
**Looking for balance** A true hybrid is often the sweet spot, especially for newer consumers who aren’t sure which direction they lean.
**Not sure at all** Come talk to us. Seriously. That’s what we’re here for.
