Two big bricks of hashish

When you make hashish, you participate in a cannabis ritual that’s been around for centuries. Our ancestors were puffing hash long before we had shatter or wax. It’s the OG cannabis concentrate!

Hash has been around for centuries. It’s no big secret or complicated recipe—just a potent way to get the most out of the marijuana plant. Anyone can do it with the right amount of weed and a little know-how.

We put down our bongs long enough to write this how-to blog. We’ll show you how to make hashish, learn about its history, and provide tips for the best ways to smoke it.

What is Hashish?

Hashish, also known as hash, is a concentrated version of cannabis. To make hashish, you rub resin from the marijuana plant together into balls or bricks. The resin of cannabis is full of trichomes, the tiny little hairs on marijuana that produce cannabinoids like THC.

Because trichomes are full of cannabinoids but lack much of the plant materials from marijuana, combining them into hash makes a highly potent concentrate. By learning how to make hashish, you’re maximizing the buzz from your buds.

It’s not hard to make hashish—humans have been doing it for centuries. Long before we had fancy chemicals and machines to make concentrates, people simply rubbed their hands together after harvesting cannabis to make balls of highly psychoactive resin called charas!

The Benefits of Hash

If you like conserving cannabis and getting the most from your flower, you’ll want to make hashish. It’s an incredibly efficient product that gets the most cannabinoids out of your plant and into your bowl, making it highly potent and cost-effective.

When you learn how to make hashish, you maximize the buzzy potential of marijuana while participating in a centuries-old tradition. It’s an easy way to have a lot of fun while connecting with the roots of marijuana.

How to Make Hashish

When you make hashish, you’ll choose between bubble hash, brick hash, and charas. Let’s dig into each type to determine which is best for you.

Charas

The easiest way to make hashish is called charas. Charas is also known as finger hash because the process involves collecting resin from your hands after trimming and farming cannabis.

Making charas is very simple. After working with weed, your fingers will develop a thin layer of resin. This dark film is full of fun, psychoactive cannabinoids. Rubbing your hands together will create small balls of resin, which you can combine and merge into bigger balls. It’s that easy!

Since commercial grow operations require trimmers to wear gloves, you can only make charas if you or a friend has a large-scale grow at home. While this isn’t always the most viable option, if you have the opportunity, it’s a quick way to make hashish. One warning: inhaling charas is harsher than other concentrate because it contains more plant matter.

Brick Hash

Brick hash is a dry, crumbly version of concentrate. It’s also known as dry sift hash. To make this hashish, you’ll need three hash screens, a scraper, and your favorite strain of cannabis.

Directions

  1. Leave your cannabis in the freezer overnight. This makes it easier for the trichomes to break off the plant.
  2. Stack your screens so the coarsest screen is on top and the finest screen is on the bottom.
  3. Rub your buds over the screen so the trichomes fall to the next screen. Continue rubbing your nugs until the trichomes are gone.
  4. Remove the upper screen and use your scraper to gather the trichomes together. Push them into the next screen.
  5. Repeat this step to strain plant material out of your trichomes.

Once you’re through, you’ll have a powdery substance that’s great for use in bowls and joints. If you want to know how to make hashish that easily elevates flower, this is your best bet. However, you can also combine the powder into a brick by using a hash press.

Bubble Hash

When cannabis connoisseurs set out to make hashish, bubble hash is what most of us picture. It has a dark, sandy color and the consistency of cookie dough.

Like brick hash, it’s best to make bubble hash with frozen cannabis so the trichomes shed easily from the plant. You’ll also need bubble bags, two 5-gallon buckets, a bag of ice, and a long stick for stirring.

Directions

  1. Fill one bucket with a layer of ice, add your cannabis, and then add more ice on top. Fill the bucket with enough water to cover the weed and ice, and let it sit for 20 minutes.
  2. In your second bucket, layer the bubble bags so the coarsest mesh is on top.
  3. Stir the weed mixture for 20 minutes to ensure the trichomes have broken off, then pour the ice water/weed mixture into the top bag in the second bucket.
  4. Pull up each bag slowly, allowing the water to flow through the mesh to the next bag. Squeeze if necessary. Do this until you get to the final bag.
  5. Spoon the wet hash onto a sheet where it can dry. Allow it to sit for three hours.
  6. Shape the hash into balls and let dry for two days before using

While slightly more involved than the brick process, when you make hashish this way, you’ll get the most from your plants. It opens up a lot of options for consumption, too.

Sprinkle bubble hash in your joints or on top of your bowls to give your favorite strain an extra potency boost. Or, add a screen to your pipe and smoke this hash just like flower. You can even load it into your dab rig for buzzy puffs of solvent-free clouds!
